Come too far to take days off so we were back amongst them. Sight seeing involves the car, which by extension means driving means the beltway. No, just NO!
The capital beltway is a beast, hours to go a few miles. I have maintained my composure, and temper, reasonably well.
The civil war started at Fort Sumpter in South Carolina. Proud to say we have been there. However the first battle on land took place at Manassas Virginia. There where two battles here, 1st and 2nd Manassas, or Bull Run. Bull Run is the name of the creek on the battlefield.
Both sides were eager, but untrained. It was a blood bath. 5000 were killed during 1st Manassas. Just look at this comparison between war deaths.
Staggering numbers. A couple of quotations for you.
And tell me you already knew this...
Next week we will visit Appomattox courthouse.
Now for way back...
Mary for the last several years has been doing genealogy research. Very thorough research. She has spent time on many branches of the tree. Some interesting items found that I will not discuss now. But in researching her family named she was able to verify members, not just suppositions, but provable with documents. That research led her to a website of a Hambric, with very detailed information. A treasure trove. Where information was found, page number, court house etc. In going through that she learned of a monument dedicated to her ancestors. We were within range of the monument in Manassas so off we went. Say hello to Clover Hill cemetery.
Say hello to her 6th great grandfather.
Otherwise known as Patrick the immigrant.
Last name on bottom is her 5th great grandfather. Now this monument does not signify their internment here. Just celebrates their lives.
Now that my friends is gathering rosebuds...
Nice research! It’s amazing to find records that go that far back. TD
