Appomattox, with malice toward none

If I asked you where the civil war ended you might reply Appomattox, or more precisely Appomattox Courthouse. Pretty good but where exactly? Courthouse's are big. I gave you a big hint a few days ago.

I knew it was Appomattox courthouse long ago. But that can be deceiving in and of itself. Appomattox courthouse is in Appomattox county, makes perfect sense. However your mind is playing word games with you. It is not a courthouse in Appomattox county. It was the town of Appomattox courthouse, not a building. In fact the courthouse in Appomattox courthouse had nothing to do with Lee's surrender ending the civil war.

The meeting between the two Generals took place in the parlor of house belonging to Wilmer Mclean. My hint to you previously and photos of the actual location.

The park service has recreated Appomattox courthouse just as it was in April 1865. We listened to an living history presentation by a young man playing a soldier who was really there. Excellent work by the young man. It never ceases to amaze me the details we learn along the way.

Some photos of the town of Appomattox courthouse, circa 1965

And just for good measure, because it really had no involvement in the surrender, the courthouse in Appomattox Courthouse.

Any curiosity about my title for todays entry? President Lincoln wanted the nation to heal quickly. in support of that desire all the rebel soldiers were paroled and given certificates, printed in the tavern, for them to have and show if challenged. It went a long way toward reconciliation. Tragically he was assassinated just a few days later.

making days count, not counting days...
