Jacksboro

  On Friday, June 18th our summer trip finally began. We left home at 9am on our 276 mile trip to Jacksboro. Why Jacksboro? A state park exactly on our route that would also facilitate something else we wanted to do.

 A lot of history to be found at this state park. We had visited once before some 25 years ago.

 We were in site 105 which turned out to be a very nice site.

 As it turned out we picked a perfect day that allowed us to view a little different history.

 Not everyday you get to see Model A's on the road. A special treat. Speaking of special treats, being in the area allowed us to visit a favorite spot. When we lived in the area we were frequent visitors to Casa Torres. Food was as tasty as we remembered.

 To maintain that special treat theme we capped off the day with some more tasty treats. First we had had in years.

 Tomorrow brings a 200 mile or so drive to Foss State Park in Foss Oklahoma. The state park is not the main attraction but it is close to Elk City where some museums are that we hope to visit.

Getting closer

 Let the countdown begin. Several things to take care of but it appears we are cleared for takeoff. Friday, June 18th we depart on our summer travels. Total time about 48 days, roaming the midwest from just south of Canadian border to the Mexican border. Check back for total mileage. Very anxious to get back on the road.

 On a ;lighter note school is out for the summer. We will have front row seats for the graduation ceremonies from our front porch. 75 young people ending one chapter of their lives and embarking on a new one. I miss the sounds of life from the school already...

Short but Enjoyable

 

 Our little trip came to an end on Friday the 9th. A different trip than we envisioned but enjoyable and informative none the less. Now on to doctors and learn what we can salvage of our summer plans. All depends on Mary's foot.

Blanco SP

 

 Tuesday found us moving on from Fairfield SP. Enjoyed our stay at this park and may return again. The 220 miles or so to Blanco were uneventful for the most part. Once again no real plans for the area. No TV reception form our site so I guess we are going old school camping!

 First time to visit this state park. Small with sites pretty close together.

Fairfield SP

  Easter Sunday meant moving day. We headed back into Texas and stopped at Fairfield state park. Will be here 2 nights with no real plans. Just enjoying being on the road in the RV.

Cane River Creole

 

 After taking Friday off so Mary could rest her ankle we were back on the learning trail.

Cane River Creole National Historical Park

 We have learned a lot about the history of the Cane River area. To be honest I had never heard of the Cane river. The previous post dealt with the earliest settlers and the native Indians. Today we toured and witnessed surviving plantation era buildings and land. Very informative.

 Magnolia was our first stop. Due to Mary's limited ability to walk we did not fully explore the buildings and exhibits. The main house of this old plantation is privately owned and not part of the historical park.

 Both plantations operated small store/gas stations in their later years.

 Next up was Oakwood. The most complete plantation to be found. In fact the Prudhome family lived in it till 1998 when it was given to park service.

 Those majestic oaks where planted in the 1800's and are quite beautiful. The old slave quarters were used by share croppers and tenant farmers after slavery. Difficult to imagine living in these small buildings in the 1960's.

 We have thoroughly our stay and visit to this area. Very nice campground and plenty of history to expose yourself to.

Natchitoches

  Natchitoches, (nat-cha-tis). Surprisingly nice little town with long heritage. We are camped at Grand Ecor RV park, probably one of the nicest we have ever stayed in.

 A lot of history in and around this town. They have done a nice job restoring the river front area. Some long standing business's still going strong.
